CORALVILLE - Dick Myers thought the day was perfect – a sunny 70-degree day. It followed a Sunday of storms and a tornado sighting in North Liberty.

"The Community Foundation of Johnson County is a wonderful organization that helps many nonprofit agencies in our area,” said the former legislator who served as grand marshal of the fifth annual Tee Off for Philanthropy / Team Up for Community golf outing.

Myers was among the 96 golfers and 24 foursomes of players who took part in the fifth annual tournament hosted by the Community Foundation of Johnson County. More than 30 volunteers, many members of the Iowa City AM Rotary, were on hand to help with registration and golfing contests for the players.

The Charity Ball Drop featuring $10,000 in prizes highlighted the day’s many activities. The Coralville Fire Department dropped more than 800 from the department’s ladder truck. This year's event benefited United Action for Youth (UAY), Hometown Heroes fund and the Community Foundation’s own operating fund.

Many of the golfers practiced putting before the tournament in hopes of winning one of three prizes for a hole-in-one – a car from Carousel Motors or motorcycles provided by Hawkeye Harley Davidson and Iowa City Motorsports.

Raffles and contests make the tournament special and our sponsors know they are supporting a great cause, said Casey Cook, CFJC Board president. “The foundation is one of the area’s best-kept secrets." It's a homegrown community organization that engages and serves a lot of people."

UAY offers numerous programs and services to assist youth and families including youth development, counseling and prevention programs that make use of young people’s talents, creativity, and energies.

Hometown Heroes benefits at-risk, under-privileged school-age children in Johnson County offering scholarship grants to provide learning opportunities to attend academic, artistic and athletic summer camps that encourage and reward positive behavior.

The Tee Off / Team Up committee members included Casey Cook, Joe Wegman, Luke Prottsman, Rochelle Dietiker, Greg Turner, Tim Krumm, Terry Dahms, Mike Messier, and Adam Veldhuizen, who served as an intern from the University of Iowa marketing area.

The Community Foundation of Johnson County is the preferred vehicle to build a stronger community through philanthropy. The foundation has granted more than $3.4 million throughout its 10-year history and encouraged nearly $420,000 in in-kind contributions from Foundation supporters. Volunteers have contributed more than 26,000 hours to support the Foundation’s philanthropic efforts. With nearly $6.5 million in endowment assets and $4.45 million in bequests, the Community Foundation administers its endowed assets for 58 agencies and 104 different funds at a minimal cost of only 1.249 percent to accomplish its goals – build an endowment for the greater community good.
