IOWA CITY – Golf enthusiasts are beginning the drive with plans the fifth annual “Tee Off for Philanthropy | Team Up for Community” golf outing.

This year Tee Off | Team Up will be held May 23 at the Brown Deer Golf Course and Country Club in Coralville and the tournament will benefit Hometown Heroes, United Action for Youth and Community Foundation of Johnson County.

Organizers are developing new features including a Charity Ball Drop, which provides nonprofit organizations receiving funding from the Community Foundation of Johnson County, as well as local service clubs, an opportunity to sell raffle tickets and a chance to receive additional funds.

Local Realtor® Rex Brandstatter will emcee the Charity Ball Drop. The Coralville Fire Department’s ladder truck will drop 2,000 numbered golf balls on the first green. The “drop” offers a total of $10,000 in prize money to those organizations selling the most tickets.

Organizations have an opportunity to win a number of prizes. Those who participate by purchasing Charity Ball Drop raffle tickets will win if their ball lands in or closest to the hole. – first prize, $5,000; second prize, $2,500; and five third prizes, $500, will be awarded. Local non-profit organizations have offered to help sell raffle tickets and they have a chance at the big time money prizes as well.

Another new golf outing feature is the opportunity to “play with a professional.” Pros who are donating time include Derik Birt of Blue Top Ridge Riverside Casino & Golf Resort, Sean McCarty and Brian Wernimont, both of Brown Deer.

Dick Myers, long time Coralville businessman and former legislator, will serve as the tournament’s grand marshal this year.
