History of the Foundation
Today
Through the dedicated efforts and hundreds of hours of discussion by a visionary group of community-minded leaders, the Community Foundation of Johnson County continues to grow endowment assets and award community grants — while continuing to work on our mission – building an endowment for our community.
January 2009
Distributed $358,985 to community nonprofit organizations. Since founding, CFJC total grants awarded to non-profit organizations have surpassed $2.005 million. Updated the Foundation’s Web presence.
Summer 2008
Raised $630,936 and awarded grants addressing widespread floods in the region.
June 2008
Created a special flood relief fund to accept gifts from friends who wish to support Johnson County communities and nonprofit organizations recover and rebuild from flood-related damages not covered by insurance or other resources
June 2007
Total assets including pledges exceed $4.12 million. Since founding, CFJC total grants awarded to non-profit agencies have surpassed $1 million dollars ($1,015,705).
January 2006
Awarded grants totaling $108,000, to bring giving in Johnson County communities to $508,000. Foundation assets have grown to $3.2 million.
January 2005
Awarded grants totaling more than $60,000 at the first Community Foundation Awards Luncheon where contributors and grant recipients shared the meaning of philanthropy,
December 2003
Awarded grants totaling $24,000 to community non-profit organizations, bringing total to $46,000 during the last three years.
November 2001
Established the Directors Fund in an effort to continue granting following the tragedy on September 11, 2001.
December 2000
Office established at Chamber of Commerce location, with help from Selzer Werderitsch Associates. The office is staffed by an Executive Director. Organizational structure and short-range goals are defined.
October 2000
Non-profit status granted.
July 2000
Received first major gift from Dick Schwab.
June 2000
Filed for non-profit status and tax identification.
June 2000
Articles of Incorporation and bylaws drafted with the help of Bob Downer, Tom Gelman and Sandy Boyd.
April/May 2000
Leslie Associates, Inc. surveyed community leaders concerning possibility of a community foundation. Study recommended creation of a foundation.
Fall 1998
Bill Furlong conducted a study of community foundations within the Big Ten markets. Study suggested success.
June 1998
Formed initial Task Force for evaluation.
November 1997
Community leaders meet to discuss an idea.
